THEODORE Mag: What does bespoke tailoring mean to you beyond simply creating a suit that fits?

Chokman Tailors: Bespoke tailoring is the art of translating who someone is into what they wear. A suit that fits is the minimum; what we’re really doing at Chokman is building a garment around a person’s body, their story, and how they want to feel on one of the most important days of their life. Every measurement, every seam, every fabric choice is a decision made specifically for that individual. Nothing is borrowed from someone else’s pattern. That level of intention is what separates true bespoke from everything else.

THEODORE Mag: How do you approach designing a wedding suit that feels timeless rather than trend-driven?

Chokman Tailors: I always start with the person, not the trend. Trends are seasonal; a person’s character isn’t. When someone sits across from me in our Sydney CBD studio, I’m listening for what they value, how they carry themselves, what makes them feel most like themselves. Classic construction, premium European wool, clean lines - these age beautifully. The personalisation comes through details: a specific lapel width, a lining fabric that means something to them, a subtle monogram. That’s what makes a suit timeless. It was never trying to follow anything.

THEODORE Mag: What surprises clients most when they go through the Chokman process for the first time?

Chokman Tailors: Almost universally, how collaborative it is. People come in expecting to be told what to wear. Instead, we spend the first consultation just talking. We talk about the occasion, the venue, their partner, what they love, and what they’ve always hated about suits they’ve worn before. By the time we get to fabric selection, they’re already invested in the outcome. The second surprise is the fit at the first try-on. When a garment is built from 30+ measurements taken specifically for your body, the difference is immediate and physical. Clients stand differently in it. That moment never gets old.

THEODORE Mag: How do you help someone translate their personality into a suit they’ll genuinely love wearing?

Chokman Tailors: I ask a lot of questions, and I listen carefully to the answers. Someone who describes themselves as quietly confident is going to wear something very different from someone who wants to walk into a room and own it; even if they both want a navy suit. The fabric weight, the structure, the cut, the details - all of these are tuned to the person. We have over 500 European fabrics at Chokman, from understated Super 120s wools through to Holland & Sherry premium collections, and every custom detail is on the table. By the end of the process, the suit genuinely couldn’t belong to anyone else.

THEODORE Mag: Have you witnessed a moment where a client’s attitude completely changed once they put on their finished suit?

Chokman Tailors: Many times. There’s a particular moment at the final fitting when someone puts on the finished garment for the first time and looks in the mirror - where you can see something shift. Their shoulders settle, they stand taller, they go quiet for a second. One client told me it was the first time in his life he’d worn something that felt like it was actually made for him. He’d spent 20 years in off-the-rack suits feeling slightly wrong. That conversation stays with me. It’s why the work matters.

THEODORE Mag: What wedding fashion trends are you seeing today, and which styles do you believe will stand the test of time?

Chokman Tailors: We’re seeing couples move away from the idea that wedding attire has to follow a prescribed script. Two grooms in complementary rather than matching suits. Brides choosing a tailored suit over a dress. Non-binary partners designing something that exists entirely on their own terms. That shift toward individuality and away from convention is the most significant change I’ve seen, and I think it’s permanent. Style-wise, soft structured shoulders, relaxed trousers, and ivory or warm stone tones are all strong right now. Of those, the relaxed silhouette with quality fabric will age the best - it’s essentially a modern version of how the best suits have always been made.

THEODORE Mag: If you could give one piece of advice before choosing a wedding suit, what would it be?

Chokman Tailors: Don’t start with the suit, start with how you want to feel. Everything else follows from that answer. If you want to feel powerful, we build toward that. If you want to feel relaxed and effortless, we build toward that. The fabric, the cut, the details - they’re all in service of that feeling. Too many people get distracted by images online and end up chasing a look that doesn’t belong to them. When you know how you want to feel on the day, choosing a suit becomes simple.
