So, straight off the bat, tell us who are you?
I’m a dad of two girls, both under the age of 3; yes, there are loads of tutus in the house. I’m also a husband, and I’m a creative with many outlets; advertising, photography, editorial fashion, wedding photography, image retoucher, interior designer, graphic designer and gardener. I’m definitely driven by beauty, I like making everything more beautiful, and I’m so lucky to call this my job. I also love turning my aesthetic skill-set into a thriving business, so I would even say I love being an entrepreneur, and sharing what we do with the world.
Tell us about your background as a photographer, and when and how did this all start for you?
I studied graphic design and got a job as an art director for Lorna Jane at 22 years of age.
Three years later, I was shooting all their campaigns and lookbooks, and I self-honed my skills with studio lighting and photography. I then had Triumph Lingerie knocking at my door to shoot their campaigns as well, so I then entered into life as a freelancer very easily & quickly. From there, I moved from Brisbane to Sydney to chase that dream and have been shooting for 11 years. www.henrykphoto.com
When did you turn towards wedding photography?
6 years ago we founded ImageHaus. I wanted to see how I liked shooting weddings and I quickly fell in love with them! We started around the time Instagram came about, and since then fashion became a more significant component in weddings. That fashion component excited me as weddings became ‘cool’, as did destination weddings. Also, I wasn’t seeing the quality that I wanted to see within wedding photography, so we created the style I wanted to see, and that leans heavily on fashion editorial photography and lighting.
For you personally, what has been the highlight of your wedding photography career?
Being listed in the top 5 Wedding photographers by Harper’s BAZAAR was probably it. It was announced out of the blue while we were deep in production on upcoming jobs and we stopped to celebrate for a minute.
In the early stages of ImageHaus, we had our initial challenges growing confidence in a ‘brand name’ (as most photographers use their own name which initially is much easier). Still, I love that we, as a company of many photographers and videographers hit that list.
Let’s talk about ImageHaus as a brand. Tell us what you offer and your unique way of approaching wedding photography?
What we love offering is full coverage, our signature package. That’s photography, videography and art books, all polished with the ImageHaus aesthetic.
There were weddings where we loved what we shot as photographers, but the videos we saw delivered to the couple were not shot with an editorial edge to them, so I grew a team that could achieve that. We did the same with our editorial art books. Now we are embarking on photobooths.
When a couple books ImageHaus, did they get you, or do you have a team?
Couples have a choice, If I’m available on their wedding day, then I’m always offered. However, my team is more affordable, so couples can choose between the packages. Couples always meet their head photographer before booking too, as I believe a connection is needed between them and the photographer for the best work to happen. I then always edit the final work that goes out, irrespective of who shot it, I’m very much the creative director of the brand and love that side of it.
Where are your services offered?
We are available Worldwide. I love adventure, the wilder, the better! Recently we have shot in Santorini, Italy, Montenegro, Belgrade, NZ, LA, Bali, Hong Kong, etc.
There’s no denying that your photography is beyond outstanding, in fact, I don’t even think there is a word to describe how striking your wedding photography is. In saying that, I bet you book up quite far in advance… how long before a wedding day should a couple get in touch with you?
Thank you! So kind of you! Currently, we are booking the end of 2021 right now, so I’d say 12-18 months in advance if they wanted me to shoot it, but even 6 months out we would still hopefully have an ImageHaus team available. We have saved a few couples in the past last minute!
How do you keep inspired?
Watching love between a couple inspires me, I feed off that energy. Great locations are also a big one (like the NZ wedding we shot just before lockdown). Beautiful gowns and details always inspire me, beautiful people and loving souls, like my 2 girls, and lastly, flowers (I love flowers and gardening).
What is one daily habit you suggest all creatives incorporate into their daily routine to keep them inspired?
Don’t look at your phone as soon as you wake up: meditate. Our minds need space for creativity to enter into.
Before we finish up, give us 3 words to describe your photography…
Polished, contemporary and soulful.
Finally, what is your number one piece of wedding planning advice?
Be present in the moment, every moment. Enjoy every minute of your wedding day, because it’s will be over so quickly. Don’t sweat the small stuff.
