In Conversation with Wedding Photographer Adam Egan

Adam Egan has a way of seeing a wedding day that feels both considered and completely unforced. His images capture not only the grand gestures but the fleeting, in-between moments that often carry the most meaning. With an instinct for connection and a quiet, refined approach, he turns real emotion into timeless photographs.

Your images have a distinct energy. How do you approach capturing a wedding day in a way that feels so natural and effortless?

It might sound cliché, but every wedding really is different. The couple, the energy, the venue, even the time of year all shape the day. For me, the work starts well before I pick up the camera. Communication is everything. I love getting to know my couples and building trust in the lead-up. That connection helps them relax, which allows the moments to unfold naturally. I am not just there to document the big, obvious moments, but also the quiet in-between ones, the glances, gestures, and fleeting bits of magic that often say the most.

What’s the most unexpected or unforgettable moment you’ve ever photographed?

Definitely photographing in torrential rain. I’ve never had to adapt on the fly quite like I did that day. There was 142mm of rain, with literal rivers running through the venue. It was chaos in the best way. What made it unforgettable wasn’t just the weather, but the couple’s attitude. They fully embraced it, soaking up every moment (literally). The result? A gallery that still turns heads and reminds me how powerful it is when couples lean into the unexpected.

How do you build trust with couples so they feel completely themselves in front of the camera?

It starts well before the wedding day. I stay in touch throughout the lead-up, keeping things relaxed and open so nothing ever feels too formal. On the day, I read the energy and keep my presence calm and unobtrusive. I’m not asking couples to perform or be anything they’re not. When they feel seen rather than directed, they naturally drop their guard, and that’s when the real magic happens.

What’s one piece of advice you always give couples before their wedding day?

In the lead-up, I always encourage couples to trust their vendors. We’re here for them, and we’re always going to put them first. But my favourite thing to do on the day itself is to quietly check in with the person waiting at the altar. Just a small moment, a reminder to let go of the nerves and be fully present. It’s about creating space for emotion, and helping them settle into the reality of what’s about to happen. That shift in energy is something I love witnessing.

What do you think makes a wedding photo truly timeless?

For me, it always comes back to what I stand by: moments over perfection. A timeless photo isn’t about everything looking flawless. It’s about feeling something real. The images people remember are the ones where my couples are fully present and in awe of each other—caught in a moment that mattered.

What excites you most about the future of Adam Egan Photography?

I’m excited to keep leaning into storytelling that feels honest and unposed, capturing more of those fleeting, in-between moments that couples often don’t realise are happening. I’m also exploring new formats like film, which brings a different kind of texture and feeling to the work. But most of all, I’m excited about the people. Every couple brings something unique, and being trusted to document that never loses its meaning.

Your work captures a perfect balance between refined artistry and raw emotion. How would you describe your signature style in wedding photography?

I’d describe it as honest, considered, and connection-driven. I’m drawn to those in-between moments that feel effortless but say so much. There’s a quiet refinement to how I shoot, but I never want things to feel overly posed or polished. It’s about creating space for real emotion and then capturing it in a way that still feels timeless.

What advice would you give couples when choosing their wedding photographer?

Choose someone you genuinely connect with. Your photographer will be with you through some of the most intimate, emotional parts of your day, so it’s important you feel comfortable around them. Look beyond just the photos and pay attention to how their work makes you feel. Do you see yourself in those moments? Can you imagine being that relaxed and present? The right photographer won’t just capture how it looked, but how it felt.
