In Conversation with Sydney Wedding Photographer Anna Liisa
With a background in fashion and a deep sensitivity to emotion, Anna Liisa approaches wedding photography with a quiet, intuitive lens. Her work is less about directing moments and more about allowing them to unfold, capturing the subtle, in-between exchanges that so often define a day.
THEODORE Mag: Can you share a little about your journey into wedding photography and what led you to build Anna Liisa Photography as it is today?
Anna Liisa: I worked in fashion for over 10 years, immersed in storytelling, detail and composition. When I was offered the chance to photograph a friend’s wedding, I loved the emotion, the realness of it all, and it felt like a really natural shift. That experience became the turning point that led me into wedding photography and ultimately shaped the career I continue to build today.
THEODORE Mag: Your imagery feels gentle, emotive and quietly powerful. How would you describe your approach to photographing love and connection?
Anna Liisa: My approach is observational and intuitive. I don’t aim to direct emotion, but to create space for it to unfold naturally. I believe the most meaningful images are found in authenticity — in moments that are unperformed, unhurried, and deeply felt.
THEODORE Mag: You have a beautiful way of noticing in-between moments. What are you instinctively drawn to on a wedding day?
Anna Liisa: On a wedding day, I’m instinctively drawn to what happens between the milestones. The pause before a ceremony begins, the exhale after vows are exchanged, the small interactions that carry emotional weight. These fleeting moments often hold more truth than anything staged.
THEODORE Mag: How does your own perspective on relationships, intimacy or human connection shape the way you photograph couples?
Anna Liisa: Being married myself has given me a really grounded view of relationships — that intimacy lives in the everyday, not just the big gestures. Because of that, I’m drawn to photographing couples in a way that feels natural and unforced. I pay attention to how they lean into each other, how comfortable they are in the quiet moments, and I try to capture that sense of ease and connection rather than anything overly staged.
THEODORE Mag: Many couples say your photographs feel very ‘them’. How do you take the time to understand who your couples are before the wedding day?
Anna Liisa: Understanding my couples is essential to my process. Before the wedding day, I take time to listen — to learn who they are, how they love, and what matters to them beyond the surface details. That foundation allows the imagery to feel personal, natural, and unmistakably theirs.
THEODORE Mag: Is there a moment you’ve captured that surprised you emotionally, something small, fleeting, but unforgettable?
Anna Liisa: There was a moment where the bride’s grandmother was looking at her own wedding photo with her late husband. It was incredibly quiet and fleeting, but so full of history and love. That moment really stayed with me — it was a reminder of how weddings hold not just one day, but generations of stories and memories all at once.
THEODORE Mag: What does being trusted with someone’s wedding memories mean to you personally?
Anna Liisa: Being trusted with something so personal feels like a real privilege, not something I take lightly. I’m always aware that these photos will live on long after the day itself, so I approach it with a lot of care — wanting to capture the moments that actually matter, in a way that feels true to them and their story.
THEODORE Mag: When couples revisit their photographs years later, what do you hope they feel, not just about the day, but about themselves?
Anna Liisa: When couples return to their photographs years later, I hope they feel a sense of recognition — not just of the day, but of themselves. I want the images to remind them of how deeply they were loved, and how fully present they were in that moment in time.
