Interview Alexander Ross
“…My style is a mash-up of landscape, fashion, and documentary photography. Cinema is a big influence too. I’m all about clean, aesthetic tones and nailing the lighting in every shot if possible.”
How did your journey into wedding photography begin?
It all started with snapping photos of surfing and the ocean, which eventually led me to documenting people and places. Then, I got asked to photograph a wedding and that's when I got hooked. I loved the storytelling side of it—each day was so different, with unexpected moments that made it all interesting and unique. Over the years, I've shot hundreds of weddings, and now I've been doing it full-time for 15 years and loving every minute of it.
What personal experiences or influences have shaped your unique style in wedding photography?
My style is a mash-up of landscape, fashion, and documentary photography. Cinema is a big influence too. I'm all about clean, aesthetic tones and nailing the lighting in every shot if possible.
What can couples expect from you as their wedding photographer?
Get ready to laugh! Couples often think I'm serious and quiet, but once we start chatting, they see I'm very laid back and easygoing. I strive to capture those natural moments without getting in the way. Making sure you have a fun day—that's my top priority.
How do you help couples who feel nervous or camera-shy to feel comfortable and natural in front of the camera?
I've got a knack for making things easier than expected. I chat with couples like we're hanging out at a café, so they can relax and be themselves. Every personality type has great moments worth capturing, and I'm all about catching those genuine interactions.
What tips do you give couples for preparing for their wedding day photos to ensure they get the best results?
Planning is key. I help couples map out their day so it flows smoothly and everyone feels relaxed. It's all about having enough time for everything and making sure your vision shines through. Send me your mood boards and inspirations—I love getting a feel for what you're envisioning.
How do you collaborate with couples to incorporate their personal style and vision into their wedding photos?
I love hearing what couples like and why they chose me. Whether it's the documentary feel, attention to detail, or my true-to-life colours, I tailor my approach in some ways to match your vibe.
What's your favourite moment of a wedding to capture?
I'm all about the cocktail hour and people mingling. It's when everyone's relaxed and having a blast. Capturing those congratulations and genuine moments—it's what I love most. I also love photographing a couple alone to get some intimate and quieter moments.
How do you balance capturing candid moments with orchestrating posed shots during a wedding?
I'm big on candid shots, but I also have a vision for those portrait moments. A casual stroll or chat can set the scene for natural, fun portraits. The rest is about being there to catch those unexpected, real moments.
What's your approach to capturing intimate moments without making the couple feel like they're constantly being photographed?
I step back a bit and use different lenses to give you space whilst still getting those intimate shots. I follow along with your vibe—I want you to feel comfortable and enjoy your day.
And finally, what's your number one piece of wedding advice?
Take it all in, because it flies by. Forget what everyone else says and do your day your way. The photos? They'll capture the real connections and joy of your day, guaranteed.
