In Conversation with UK Wedding Photographer Oliver J

Oliver J’s approach to wedding photography is driven by feeling first. With over a decade behind the camera, his work is defined by movement, emotion and a fine art–editorial sensibility that never loses its warmth. Equal parts hype man and quiet observer, Oliver brings energy, ease and a deep appreciation for human connection to every wedding he photographs.

THEODORE Mag: When did you start wedding photography, and what inspired you to become a wedding photographer?

OJ: I’ve been a pro-tog for 12 years now, but in the industry 15! By chance, a local photographer saw images I shot at a friend's wedding and asked me to second shoot for them. Weddings soon became my love and second nature, and I’ve never looked back!

THEODORE Mag: How would you describe your style in your own words?

OJ: Emotional. Every shot for me has to have movement, a nuance and something that draws you in - I get that through a combination of mainly a fine art and editorial approach.

THEODORE Mag: What inspires you outside of photography and weddings?

OJ: People, for sure. Just spending time with family and friends makes you observe and appreciate the small things - the level of compassion that inspires my shooting style.

THEODORE Mag: What can couples expect when they book you for their wedding?

OJ: Energy and a good laugh! Hahaha!

I’m your biggest hype man but also your invisible supporter - I got you.

THEODORE Mag: What’s your favourite part of a wedding day to capture?

OJ: The couple's portraits, deffo!

It’s usually post-ceremony when they’re most relaxed but still energised and excited, and they’re invested  - it’s like play time for a wedding photographer!

THEODORE Mag: How do you approach telling each couple’s unique story?

OJ: The best way for me is to get my couples as relaxed as possible(which on a wedding day can be a challenge!) so that they naturally let themselves shine through - organic and authentic.

THEODORE Mag: Has your work changed or evolved since you first started?

OJ: Yes and no! Yes, always moving, always evolving, always changing as it follows the natural rhythm of me as I also evolve and change, personally. But the feedback I always get is ‘I can tell that’s an Oliver picture’, so I guess to a certain degree, no, it’s still me there, in my work… and I love that for me.

THEODORE Mag: Looking back, what’s a moment from a wedding that really stays with you?

OJ: Honestly, there are SO many! I’ve been fortunate enough to see so much, travel to a lot of incredible places and experience so many wonderful weddings that as a whole I often step back and go ‘whoah!’

Every wedding is unique and every picture personal… I’m grateful for all of the moments.
