We Get To Know Melbourne Based Wedding Photographer Georgia Verrells
As they say, a picture tells a thousand words, and this couldn't be truer especially with wedding photography.

We always get to see spectacular images taken by a wedding photographer, but very rarely do we get to encounter the person actually taking the photos. That's why we decided to get to know Melbourne based wedding photographer Georgia Verrells on a deeper level and hear directly from her what exactly it is that makes her wedding photography so damn beautiful.
So, straight off the bat, who are you?
My name is Georgia Verrells, and I'm a wedding photographer based in Melbourne.
Tell us a little about your background as a photographer and when and how it all started for you?
When I was 18, I left Australia and moved to London to travel and work at a financial firm. The experience was amazing; I remember walking to work from London Bridge station and taking in everything, looking up, noticing the little things and taking photos. At one point that changed and I stopped looking around and just got up went to work and came home, I had stopped really seeing… I knew I wasn't happy and decided to save, quit my job and travel around America and Canada.
I did this and met the most amazing people, stayed on sofas, learnt about peoples stories, travelled to the most amazing placed and photographed what I heard and saw. One of the people I had met worked for Instagram, and I ended up working on part of a campaign with them when Instagram direct came out. This really shaped my next part of my journey; I realised how important photos are to communicate.
I moved back to Australia shortly after and studied Communication Design at RMIT in Melbourne. While studying, friends started getting married, and I would document their day, I loved it! I loved the storytelling aspect, talking to people and documenting the moments between - it was so raw and authentic. I decided it was what I wanted to do.
For you personally, what has been the highlight of your wedding photography career?
There isn't one moment that stands out; it's all the little moments. It's receiving a handwritten card thanking me and telling me how much their photos mean to the couple. It's the sad moments where I'm told someone's uncle passed away and how much they treasure having had me to document that person. I lost my Grandma last year, and I wish I had more photos of us together, I think being able to stop time with a photo and have that forever is so precious.
What makes your photography stand out from the others?
I feel it's the authenticity shown in my photos, I'm always very natural and take a more behind the scenes style to capture all the in-between natural, raw moments. But you get me as a person at your wedding day, I'm part of your day, and I'm friendly, I try to be funny and give a good dose of soul in my images. I also edit my images with warmth and vibrancy.
When a couple book you, do they get you or do you have a team?
They always get me!
Where do you work? Are you limited to one area, or can couples from all over the globe book you?
I mainly shoot in Melbourne (where I'm based), but I do travel all over Australia and the world for weddings. It's good to know that I only take on a limited amount of bookings a year, so it really depends on how my year in advance is looking.
How long before a wedding day should a couple get in touch with you?
I would suggest 12-24 months in advance; I'm already booking 2021.
How do you keep inspired?
The world around me! I'm always watching movies, both new and old, that inspire me and listening to music and looking at art to influence my work. I am a firm believer that the more knowledge online and in-person you see, read, hear that the more creative you become. I am always thirsty!

And finally, Give us your number 1 piece of wedding planning advice?
Remember its YOUR day so do what you both want rather than listening to others. I feel one of the most important parts of wedding planning is to talk about your timeline with your suppliers early. Make sure it works for everyone and to make sure you have enough time for photos, golden hour and some time to relax after the ceremony! I guess that's two pieces of advice, but you get the idea!
