In Conversation with Ell of Rogue Weddings

Having spent years in the wedding world, Ell began to feel uninspired—everything was starting to look and feel the same. But as the industry began to shift, so did Ell’s perspective. Inspired by personal change and a desire to celebrate individuality, Rogue Weddings was born—a space where art, emotion, and real connection collide. With a passion for pushing boundaries and making space for every kind of love, Ell is quietly rewriting the rules—one wedding at a time.

“Rogue came to life during a time of some big personal changes. It was inspired by someone incredibly special to me—who showed me that life doesn’t have to fit inside a neat little box, and neither should my photography. There’s so much more out there than the cookie-cutter version we’re sold, and Rogue became a way to honour that.”

What inspired you to become a wedding photographer, and how did Rogue Weddings come to life?

I’ve been in the wedding world for a long time, and for a while there, everything started to blur together. The photos, the poses, the vibes—it all felt the same, and I just wasn’t feeling inspired anymore.

But something’s shifted over the past few years. There’s been this beautiful wave of creativity and individuality sweeping through the wedding industry, and it’s honestly been so refreshing to witness and be part of.

Rogue came to life during a time of some big personal changes. It was inspired by someone incredibly special to me—who showed me that life doesn’t have to fit inside a neat little box, and neither should my photography. There’s so much more out there than the cookie-cutter version we’re sold, and Rogue became a way to honour that.

How would you describe your approach to wedding photography, and what sets you apart from others in the industry?

At its core, my approach to wedding photography is all about pushing creative boundaries and breaking away from the traditional. My clients know me as someone who’s always up for experimenting and bringing bold, fresh ideas to life.

Rogue was built to allow couples to embrace something different, especially those who want their wedding photos to be fun, artistic, and entirely their own. Collaboration is a huge part of that—I love working with couples to develop creative concepts that make their wedding day feel as unique as it is meaningful. And honestly, this is just the beginning. I’m excited to keep pushing the limits of just how much fun and creative wedding photography can be.

Can you share a defining moment in your career that solidified your passion for capturing love stories?

One moment that truly cemented my passion for wedding photography was the first same-sex wedding I attended. It was just two weeks after marriage equality was legalised in Australia (Dec 2017), and the energy in the room was indescribable. The couple, two incredible women, were beyond excited to finally have the right to marry.

What do you enjoy most about working with couples on their wedding day?

I absolutely love teaming up with my couples to dream up something a bit different—something that really feels like them. Some of my favourite moments start with a random text at midnight, full of excitement and ideas.  I’m all about that kind of energy.

Most of the time, people tell me they’re awkward in front of the camera or dreading the photo part of the day. I LOVE proving them wrong! I’m here to show you that it can actually be fun, chilled, and maybe even one of your favourite parts of the day.

I love rolling with the day and seeing where it takes us. A few times now, we’ve ended up at the pub or grabbing Maccas mid-wedding—and those spontaneous moments always make for the best memories (and some pretty epic photos, too).

Where do you draw inspiration from to create such authentic and emotive imagery?

I pull a lot of inspo from films and art—stuff that makes you feel something. I try not to look too much at what other wedding photographers are doing. Instead, I’m more interested in drawing energy from other parts of life and seeing how that can be translated into a wedding day.

If you could give one piece of advice to couples searching for their perfect wedding photographer, what would it be?

Make time to catch up with your wedding photographer—in person or over a video call. Trust me, there’s nothing more awkward than rocking up on your wedding day and realising you just don’t vibe with the person who’s meant to be capturing your memories.

You want to feel comfortable, safe, and totally yourself around your photographer. That’s how the best, most real photos happen.

And communication is everything. Wedding photography is its own kind of art, and it’s super subjective—you’ve got to be able to chat openly and work together to bring your vision to life.
