In Conversation with Chris Ferenzi: Washington DC Wedding Photographer
Chris Ferenzi’s path to wedding photography began during college, when a simple creative outlet sparked a deep appreciation for storytelling through images. What started with documenting campus life soon led to photojournalism and, eventually, to weddings where the fast pace and raw emotion felt like home. Now based in Washington, D.C., Chris is known for capturing the unfiltered, in-between moments that reveal the real magic of a wedding day.
“I bring my personal touch to every wedding by approaching it as a completely unique experience—not a one-size-fits-all event. I take the time to understand my couples, their personalities, and what matters most to them so that their photos truly reflect who they are.”
What first attracted you to wedding photography, and how has your journey evolved since then?
My journey into wedding photography started as a hobby back in college. I’ve always loved photography, but it wasn’t until I began experimenting with my camera during my free time that I realized how much I enjoyed capturing people’s stories. I started taking photos of friends and events around campus, and I found myself drawn to the emotions that could be captured in a single moment. It was clear to me that photography wasn’t just about taking pictures—it was about preserving memories and telling stories, and that’s when I first became interested in wedding photography.
As my skills developed, I took on more opportunities. I ended up working for the school newspaper, which gave me a chance to cover a wide range of events and really hone my craft. From there, I moved on to a regional newspaper, where I gained even more experience, shooting everything from news stories to portraits. Eventually, I had the opportunity to assist a photojournalist who also shot weddings. Watching how they worked and seeing the connection they had with couples made me realize that wedding photography was where I wanted to focus my energy. The combination of capturing intimate, once-in-a-lifetime moments and the challenge of managing fast-paced, high-pressure environments felt like the perfect fit for me.
Since then, my journey has evolved in ways I hadn’t expected. I’ve had the privilege of photographing hundreds of weddings, learning more about myself and the art of photography along the way. What started as a hobby has now become my full-time career, and I’m grateful every day that I get to do what I love. With each wedding, I continue to grow, adapt, and push myself creatively. What excites me now is not just capturing the big moments, but also the little, real ones—the ones that tell a couple’s unique story. My journey in wedding photography has truly been a rewarding and fulfilling path, and I’m excited to see where it takes me next.
Can you share a defining moment or experience that shaped your approach to capturing weddings?
A defining moment that shaped my approach to capturing weddings happened early on in my career, when I was photographing a couple’s wedding and found myself in a situation where everything didn’t go according to plan. The timeline was running behind, the weather wasn’t cooperating, and there were unexpected hiccups throughout the day. As a photographer, it could have been easy to get stressed or overwhelmed, but I quickly realized that these moments—imperfections and all—were what made the day special. It wasn’t about getting the “perfect” shot; it was about capturing the authenticity and emotion of the day, no matter what was happening around me.
That experience really changed my perspective on wedding photography. It taught me that my role is not just to document the events but to tell the real story of the couple—the joy, the excitement, the quiet moments, and the unexpected surprises that make the day unique. Now, I focus on staying present and flexible, making sure I capture those unscripted moments that truly reflect who my couples are. It’s about embracing the day as it unfolds and not trying to force things to fit into an idealized vision. That moment helped me realize that the most meaningful photos come from being in the moment and allowing the natural beauty of the day to shine through.
How does Washington, D.C., inspire your work? Are there any locations or aspects of the city that hold special meaning for you?
Washington, D.C. is such an inspiring city for my work, especially because of its unique blend of history, modernity, and natural beauty. The city is full of iconic landmarks and hidden gems that offer endless creative possibilities for photography. From the stunning architecture of the National Mall to the peaceful ambience of the Tidal Basin, D.C. provides a diverse backdrop to all kinds of photography. I love how the city’s energy and history can add so much depth to a photo.
There are certain locations in the city that hold special meaning for me. The National Arboretum is one of my favorites—it offers such a tranquil, scenic environment that feels like a peaceful escape from the city hustle. It’s perfect for outdoor weddings or engagement sessions, with its beautiful gardens and open spaces. Another spot that stands out is the Jefferson Memorial, especially during cherry blossom season. There’s something magical about the combination of the monument and the blooming trees that creates a timeless atmosphere. For me, D.C. isn’t just where I work—it’s a place that offers endless inspiration and a unique character that always shapes and enhances the stories I capture.
What do you feel sets your work apart in the wedding industry, and how do you bring your personal touch to each celebration?
What sets my work apart in the wedding industry is my ability to capture weddings in a way that feels natural, modern, and deeply personal. I don’t just document the day—I tell each couple’s story through authentic, unscripted moments. My style is bold yet unobtrusive, allowing couples to fully immerse themselves in their wedding without feeling like they’re constantly posing for the camera. I love blending into the background while still capturing all the emotion, energy, and in-between moments that make the day truly special.
I bring my personal touch to every wedding by approaching it as a completely unique experience—not a one-size-fits-all event. I take the time to understand my couples, their personalities, and what matters most to them so that their photos truly reflect who they are. My background in engineering trained me to think on my feet, adapt quickly, and solve problems in real time, which is invaluable on a wedding day where anything can happen. Whether it’s adjusting to changing light, capturing spontaneous moments, or helping couples feel comfortable in front of the camera, I bring a calm, creative, and detail-focused approach that lets them be fully present while I take care of preserving their memories.
Are there any personal values or principles that guide your work as a photographer?
Absolutely! There are a few key values and principles that guide my work as a photographer.
Authenticity: I believe in capturing moments that feel real, not staged. My goal is to create photos that genuinely reflect the personalities and emotions of the people in them. I want the photos to feel true to who they are, not some idealized version.
Creativity and Innovation: I’m always looking for new ways to push the boundaries of what’s possible and keep my work fresh. I don’t just follow trends—I aim to bring a creative touch to every shoot that makes it unique. I love experimenting with lighting, composition, and perspectives to create images that stand out.
Respect for the Moment: I approach every shoot with a deep respect for the people and the moment I’m capturing. I’m mindful of the significance of those moments in my clients’ lives. I strive to make them feel comfortable, valued, and at ease, so they can be fully present while I capture those memories.
Professionalism and Reliability: Above all, I believe in being reliable and professional. Photography is an investment, and I’m committed to delivering the best experience possible. From the initial consultation to the final delivery of images, I aim to make the entire process smooth, transparent, and enjoyable for my clients.
These values are at the core of everything I do, and they’re what allow me to create work that resonates with my clients and reflects who I am as a photographer.
If you weren’t a photographer, what other passions or career paths might you be pursuing?
If I weren’t a photographer, I’d likely be running an animal sanctuary. I’ve always had a deep love for animals, and I’d enjoy creating a space where they can thrive in a safe, caring environment. I’d focus on providing not just the basic care, but also the enrichment and attention that helps them live fulfilling lives. The sanctuary would emphasize responsible pet ownership and raise awareness about the importance of conservation and the well-being of animals in general.
Running the sanctuary would require a mix of compassion, organization, and problem-solving—skills I’ve honed as a photographer. I’d bring the same level of dedication to managing the daily operations, from animal care to building strong partnerships with veterinarians and animal lovers. Much like my photography work, it would be about creating a place where attention to detail and a thoughtful, hands-on approach lead to meaningful results.
How do you like to spend your time when you’re not photographing weddings?
When I’m not shooting weddings, I love spending time with my dog. Going to the beach is one of my favorite ways to relax, whether it’s enjoying the waves, walking along the shore, or just soaking in the fresh air. Hiking is another way I unwind, and I enjoy exploring new trails with my dog by my side. It’s a great way to clear my head and recharge after a busy wedding season.
I’m also a big fan of hitting the gym. Staying active is important to me, not just for my health but as a way to stay energized and focused. Whether it’s lifting weights or trying out a new workout, it’s my way of taking care of myself and staying in top shape for the long days of shooting weddings and events.
In my downtime, you’ll probably find me watching 1990s sci-fi (mostly Star Trek). I’m a nerd at heart, and there’s something about the mix of technology, imagination, and quirky storylines from that decade that keeps me hooked. It’s a fun way to wind down and enjoy something a little nostalgic when I need a break from the real world.
What’s a lesson you’ve learned from your work with couples that’s influenced you personally?
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned from working with couples is the importance of being present and truly soaking in the moment. When you’re photographing a wedding, there are so many beautiful, fleeting moments happening all around you, and to capture them, you have to stay focused and fully immersed in the experience. I’ve realized how much that mindset has influenced me personally. It’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of life—the to-do lists, the goals, the constant motion—and forget to take a step back and enjoy what’s right in front of you.
Over time, I’ve learned how important it is to slow down and truly appreciate the little things, whether it’s spending time with loved ones or taking a quiet moment to reflect. Photography has taught me how to embrace the now, to look for the beauty in ordinary moments, and to not rush through life without savoring what’s meaningful. I’ve come to see how much richer life is when you’re able to be present, not just in your work but in your personal experiences as well. It’s a lesson I try to carry with me every day, whether I’m working with a couple on their wedding day or simply enjoying a moment of peace on my own.
