Meet Wedding Photographer Barbara Markiewicz
For Barbara Markiewicz, wedding photography is about far more than documenting a day. Drawn to emotion, connection, and the beauty of the in-between, she creates imagery that feels both timeless and deeply personal. With a thoughtful blend of digital and film photography, her work celebrates the quiet moments, genuine interactions, and love stories that deserve to be remembered for generations.
THEODORE Mag: What first drew you to photography, and do you remember the moment you knew weddings were your thing?
Barbara Markiewicz: I’ve always been drawn to storytelling and emotion. Photography became a way for me to hold onto fleeting moments — the in-between glances, the atmosphere, the feeling of a day. I think I realised weddings were truly my thing when I photographed one and found myself completely immersed in the energy of it all. There’s something incredibly special about documenting a day that’s so full of love, connection and meaning, knowing those images will become part of a family’s history.
THEODORE Mag: You shoot both digital and film. What is it about film that you love so much?
Barbara Markiewicz: Film has this softness and honesty to it that I absolutely adore. It slows me down in the best way and makes me shoot more intentionally. I love the texture, the tones, the imperfections — it feels nostalgic and timeless all at once. There’s also something magical about not seeing the image instantly and trusting the process. Film captures emotion in such a beautiful, soulful way.
THEODORE Mag: What's your favourite kind of moment to capture on a wedding day?
Barbara Markiewicz: Honestly, the quiet in-between moments. The deep breath before walking down the aisle, a squeeze of the hand during the speeches, someone tearing up in the background when no one notices. Of course I love the big moments too, but it’s often the small, unplanned interactions that end up meaning the most.
THEODORE Mag: How do you help couples feel relaxed and themselves in front of your camera?
Barbara Markiewicz: I never want couples to feel like they have to “perform” for photos. My approach is very gentle and natural — more about creating space for people to connect with each other rather than focusing on the camera. I’ll give guidance where needed, but mostly I encourage couples to slow down, be present and enjoy each other. The best photos happen when people feel comfortable enough to just be themselves.
THEODORE Mag: What does it mean to you to photograph all kinds of love stories?
Barbara Markiewicz: It means everything. Love deserves to be documented in all its forms, and I feel incredibly honoured whenever people trust me to tell their story. Creating a space where couples feel seen, safe and celebrated is deeply important to me. I want my work to reflect real people, real connection and the beauty of individuality.
THEODORE Mag: Where's somewhere you've always dreamed of shooting a wedding?
Barbara Markiewicz: There are so many places I’d love to photograph, but an intimate wedding somewhere along the Italian coast or US would be a dream. I’m always inspired by beautiful landscapes and places that feel full of atmosphere and emotion.
THEODORE Mag: What's one thing you wish more couples knew before booking their photographer?
Barbara Markiewicz: That your connection with your photographer matters just as much as the photos themselves. Your photographer is with you through such intimate parts of the day, so feeling comfortable, understood and genuinely cared for makes such a difference. I always encourage couples to choose someone whose work they love, but also someone who feels like the right fit personally.
THEODORE Mag: If you could give your couples one piece of advice for their wedding day, what would it be?
Barbara Markiewicz: Let go of the pressure for everything to be perfect and focus on being present with each other. The day will go by so quickly, and the moments you’ll treasure most are usually the ones you never planned for. Take it all in, hold hands often, and allow yourselves to really experience it together.
