In Conversation With Jewellery Designer Jared Brown of Jared Brown Designs
Jared Brown’s journey into jewellery design was sparked by his grandmother’s influence and honed through years of hands-on experience and study. Today, his creations balance timeless elegance with deeply personal storytelling, transforming precious metals and gemstones into wearable heirlooms.
Jared, your designs blend artistry with timeless elegance. Could you share what inspired you to pursue jewellery design and how your creative journey began?
I was inspired by my grandmother, who was a jeweller in the United Kingdom and began my own personal creative journey when I was sixteen years old, interning at a local jewellery store. After studying Gemmology and many years of working with the leading jewellers in Toronto, I began my namesake business in 2007.
What philosophy or principles guide your work, and how do these values reflect in the pieces you create?
I truly believe that your jewellery should be loved, and you can’t love it if you don’t wear it. We never want to create (or sell) a piece of jewellery that we know our clients won’t love and wear - and that we won’t love and wear ourselves.
Many of your designs seem deeply personal and intimate. How do you approach creating bespoke jewellery that tells a couple's unique story?
Understanding how a couple met or a special interest they have helps inform the design and elements that we incorporate in our bespoke jewellery. Oftentimes, it’s the special moments or memories that our couples share with us that guide our design and the decisions we make when creating their special bespoke piece.
Jewellery design often straddles the line between modern trends and classic styles. How do you balance innovation with tradition in your work?
Many of the pieces we create blend vintage designs and jewellery setting styles with a modern twist. A fitting example would be the Georgian collet-setting we incorporate in some of our recent engagement rings, with the diamond offset or set east-west to give it a modern spin.
Are there recurring motifs or design elements in your collections that have become signature to your brand? What do they symbolise?
A signature design element that we incorporate in our engagement rings is the inclusion of a diamond gallery symbolizing our attention to detail and meticulous craftsmanship, which only the individual wearing the piece can admire.
Creating bespoke jewellery comes with unique challenges. Can you share an experience where overcoming a design or material obstacle resulted in something extraordinary?
Although a specific example doesn’t come to mind - I think every bespoke piece that we design inherently comes with the challenge of trying to bring someone’s vision to reality. We work to better understand our clients style and the piece of jewellery that they have envisioned - it’s almost like I have to somehow read their minds.
What advice would you give couples selecting wedding jewellery to ensure it feels meaningful and enduring?
I always suggest to couples to “go with your gut” - it’s almost like trying on a wedding dress, when you get that feeling, you know that the jewellery is meant for you.
As Jared Brown Designs continues to grow, what exciting directions or projects are you looking forward to exploring?
We have a few exciting projects in the works (!!), but our main focus is going to be on giving back to our community and supporting initiatives that align with our values outside the world of jewellery.
