Summer Wedding Styling With Anna Wang
With summer just weeks around the corner, Mr Theodore speaks all things summer weddings and summer wedding styling with renowned wedding stylist Anna Wang. Anna gives us her predictions as to what weddings could possibly look like post COVID, as well as talks us through her take on the ideal summer wedding colour palettes as well as styling ideas.

What are your predictions for weddings moving into the season ahead?
The weddings will become extra extravagant when it comes to styling. We’ll start to see couples going all out and crazy with their decor because they’ve had to postpone their wedding even further. Weddings have had to become smaller because of Covid-19 which means there will be a massive increase in budget per person since there are fewer people to cater for. A bigger budget means get ready for more luxury weddings.
From a styling perspective, what trends are emerging?
Artificial flowers are a big emerging trend! There are so many advantages to using artificial flowers. It’s sustainable because it reduces waste and can be reused and truly aligns with the environmental consciousness trend. It’s also cost-effective for the couple because it overcomes issues related to the sourcing of flowers, especially when it comes to seasonality. Pastel colours, in particular blush pinks are trending as a colour palette for weddings and events. The delicate colours evoke a sense of nostalgia and warmth.
What are some ways couples can really capture the essence of summer in their wedding?
The best way to do this is through a vibrant colour palette that mimics lots of flow and energy. The essence of summer can be captured using yellow and orange. Not many couples think of using these brighter tones, but when they do see the beauty of it, they want pops of colour throughout their floral styling. A little hint of these summer tones can be perfect sprinkled throughout the ceremony bouquets, ceiling install and centrepiece decorations at the reception. A great amount of fresh, lush greenery is also perfect for creating that summer-feel.

What colour palettes are strong this summer?
Lots of bold colours all grouped together or soft pastels running throughout the entire wedding. I’m envisioning some very strong colour palettes such as fuchsia and jewel tones playing a big role in couples’ weddings, as it gives a sense of luxe and elegance. Especially when it's indoors, these colours will really stand out and put that ‘wow’ factor into the reception. For pastel palettes it would look stunning with an outdoor backdrop and lots of greenery, somewhere destination like the Blue Mountains or the Hunter Valley. Just very soft tones coming together with the natural scenery of the outdoors.
Describe the ideal Anna Wang summer wedding…
My ideal summer wedding would be in a marquee wedding overlooking a beautiful view (although it may be too hot but it’s totally worth it!). I’d also love to incorporate lots of bright colours that no one would think to use, like oranges, reds and gorgeous native wildflowers. For my ceiling install I’d like to keep it simple with hanging fresh greenery, using fan leaves, eucalyptus, different vines and lush leaves that span across the marquee.
Speaking of summer, what are some things couples need to really consider with a summer wedding?
With summer weddings, the most important thing to consider is the weather and how hot it will get. Especially in the Australian climate, it’s known to get in the high 30’s when summer hits so make sure there is shade for your guests or drinks available is a must. Also, if you do have a marquee wedding and it gets too stuffy, consider having a portable air conditioning unit or opening the sides up to allow for extra ventilation. You need to also consider the longevity of your fresh flowers during summer. A lot of flowers start to wilt quicker in hot weather, meaning there is a shorter time frame between the beginning of the ceremony and the flowers completely dying! Make sure they are kept in a cool environment before the ceremony and spritz them with water to keep the florals hydrated.
And finally, to make your wedding stand out, what are some little added extras couples could include within their overall look/feel/atmosphere of their wedding?
Lighting makes such a big difference to the ambience of your big day. If you had room to add a little bit of extra decor, I would suggest setting up the mood with some candles sitting on the guest tables or even tea-light centrepieces to create that dreamy glittery effect. You should also think about your venue and customise your little extras to add emphasis on whatever you’re already spending money on. For example, if you’re having a rustic wedding, why not go for a different type of cake? A ‘messy’ buttercream cake with greenery on a wooden serving board would suit the theme to a tee. Lastly, customise your wedding with a personalised logo made just for you and your big day - you can use your logo on so many things like favours, table settings, dance floor and even on the cake.
