Interview Alexander Ross
“Witnessing each partner’s reaction before they see each other for the first time is truly beautiful.”
What initially inspired you to pursue a career in wedding photography, and how has your journey unfolded since then?
I have always cherished involvement in celebrations and communal gatherings. The prospect of a conventional 9 to 5 office job never appealed to me. Therefore, discovering the opportunity to leverage my creative abilities while managing a business seemed like an ideal fit.
The journey thus far has been remarkable. Establishing and managing a team, building trusting relationships with new clients, and immersing myself in diverse traditions and cultures have been immensely rewarding experiences.
Can you share some memorable moments or experiences from your journey as a wedding photographer that have shaped your perspective on capturing love stories?
Receiving our first booking after launching the agency was a euphoric experience. Although the prospect of going live was daunting, confirming that initial booking affirmed my decision.
Being published in British Vogue three times was beyond my wildest dreams. Growing up, my sister and mother always kept the latest copy close by, and being associated with such a renowned publication was a true honour.
Securing our first international booking in Tuscany May 2025 feels like a dream and feel incredibly honoured to capture this spectacular Wedding
What do you love most about photographing weddings, and how do you strive to capture the essence of each couple’s unique story?
I thoroughly enjoy being immersed in the anticipation and excitement of the wedding day. Witnessing each partner's reaction before they see each other for the first time is truly beautiful. The mixture of nerves and excitement, and capturing the genuine reveal of each other, never fails to give me goosebumps week after week.
Every couple is unique. Some are reserved while others exude vibrancy and energy. As a wedding photographer, possessing a strong emotional intelligence (EQ) is essential to ensure the couple feels at ease. Ultimately, my goal is to capture images that authentically reflect the couple's personalities and relationships.
As an up-and-coming photographer in Melbourne, what sets your approach to wedding photography apart from others in the industry?
That's an excellent question. In my observation, many agencies and photographers in the industry adopt a transactional approach, often employing the same locations and techniques repeatedly. However, I prefer to establish a deeper connection with my clients well before their special day. Whether through in-person meetings, Zoom calls, or ongoing communication via messages, I aim to ensure that the event schedule accommodates their specific requests flawlessly. Given that we often spend over 12 hours together, it's important to me that both the clients and I enjoy the experience to the fullest extent possible.
Tell us about Ten Acres Agency and how it reflects your vision and values as a wedding photographer.
My primary objective for Ten Acres Agency was to establish a photography agency that is highly respected and valued by our clients and the public. We aim to ensure that clients feel genuinely welcomed and, of course, that we capture their special day with the utmost quality.
Our distinctive style is renowned for its timeless elegance and editorial finesse. The primary photographers oversee the day, ensuring that essential shots are captured, while the secondary photographers focus extensively on candid and social shots, with the creative freedom to explore and innovate.
How do you ensure that your photography style aligns with the desires and personalities of the couples you work with?
When clients reach out to us, they typically have already encountered our style showcased on social media platforms or websites and have developed a strong affinity for it. Therefore, they entrust us to replicate similar work for their special day.
As previously mentioned, robust emotional intelligence (EQ) is essential in the wedding photography industry. It enables photographers to accurately gauge the atmosphere and ensure that clients are never placed in uncomfortable situations.
What do you believe are the key ingredients for creating timeless and meaningful wedding photographs?
It's crucial to thoroughly acquaint yourself with your clients before the significant day and propose location ideas that align with their preferences. Assessing whether they prefer gardens, architectural settings, or perhaps the front of the Chanel building, and determining their stance on direct flash photography are pivotal questions to address during the initial stages. Some couples even provide a Pinterest mood board, which I wholeheartedly support as it facilitates a deeper understanding of their vision and aesthetic preferences.
Looking towards the future, what are your aspirations for yourself and Ten Acres Agency within the wedding photography landscape in Australia?
We are eager to advance into the Sydney market, recognising a significant opportunity for expansion in that city. With several bookings already secured for later this year, we are enthusiastic about the prospects that lie ahead.
Establishing an office space where clients can interact with our team and experience the vibrant energy of Ten Acres Agency firsthand is a key initiative in our growth strategy. We anticipate exciting developments on the horizon.
