In Conversation With: Brendan of Brendan Woods Photography
Brendan Woods’ journey into photography began in school, where his passion for cameras easily outshone other subjects. A serendipitous opportunity to photograph a wedding for Australia’s renowned floral artist My Violet catapulted him into the wedding industry, where his soulful and emotive style has made him a sought-after name ever since.
“Being entrusted to capture one of the most important days in someone’s life is an honour. I connect with the emotions, laughter, awkwardness, and people connecting with loved ones. It's a good reminder of the beauty in human connection and love, and capturing those moments feels like preserving a little piece of magic for my clients.”
What first sparked your love for photography, and how did it lead you to weddings?
Photography started in high school. I had the option of doing photography or applying myself to maths or social sciences. At the time, there was no question that I would rather play with cameras.
It led to weddings serendipitously. I like to shoot people and some photos I took ended up on social media where it was seen by Australia's most renowned and unique floral artist My Violet. She asked if I could do that at her wedding and I (overly confidently) said of course. I hired some gear, shot their very soulful wedding and it ended up getting featured in a bunch of places. I've been doing it ever since.
How does photographing weddings resonate with you on a personal level?
If you stop to think about it, weddings are very personal, and being entrusted to capture one of the most important days in someone’s life is an honour. I connect with the emotions, laughter, awkwardness, and people connecting with loved ones. It's a good reminder of the beauty in human connection and love, and capturing those moments feels like preserving a little piece of magic for my clients.
What’s one moment from a wedding you’ve captured that’s stayed with you and why?
It's usually the intergenerational elements. Grandparents down to newborns. It's pretty amazing. Capturing their connection reminds me of the fleeting, precious nature of life and relationships.
When you’re behind the lens, how do you connect with the couples to capture their truest selves?
Everyone wants to feel connected so a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere helps people feel at ease. During the shoot, I guide from time to time but their natural reactions and body language is much more important so it’s less about posed perfection and more about capturing their unique dynamic.
What’s your favourite part of the wedding day to photograph, and why does it stand out to you?
I love the “getting ready” moments. There’s a quiet anticipation in the air. Laughter with friends and family, and moments of self-reflection. It’s a time filled with vulnerability and excitement, and those intimate, unscripted moments set the tone for the day.
If you could describe your photography style as a feeling, what would it be?
A lot of people can spot my photographs because of their unique feel. But I would say my photos feel like the person I'm photographing.
How would you describe your style?
It's a pretty romanticised version of whatever situation I'm in.
What wedding planning advice would you give couples?
Enjoy the journey and stay true to yourselves. Plan a day that reflects who you are as a couple rather than what’s trending or expected. Trust your vendors, communicate your vision clearly, and remember: the most important part is celebrating your love and connection with the people who matter most.
