“We felt it important to recognise the significance of our marriage —not just the celebration of our marriage, but also the broader picture it represents. It wasn’t until the end of 2017, when Australians voted in favour, that it became a reality. We stand here today as direct beneficiaries of the tireless efforts of so many who fought for our right to marry equally. Love is love..”

How and when did you meet?

"In 2016. It was through mutual friends, as Matt Walsh was seeking carer advice about real estate, however, the meeting went in a different direction."

Tell us a little about that first time you met…

"We met over a wine at Toorak Cellars and then we didn't see each other for about 6 months after. Then we ran into one another again, and it was on from that moment."

What was the first thing you noticed about each other?

Matt Davis: Striking eyelashes and big smile.

Matt Walsh: His big hair.

What does marriage mean to you?

"We felt it important to recognise the significance of our marriage —not just the celebration of our marriage, but also the broader picture it represents. It wasn't until the end of 2017, when Australians voted in favour, that it became a reality. We stand here today as direct beneficiaries of the tireless efforts of so many who fought for our right to marry equally. Love is love!"

Who proposed and how?

"Matt Davis proposed to Matt Walsh on a holiday in 2023 at Four Seasons Jimbaran, presenting Matt Walsh with a watch."

When did you get married?

"Saturday 11 May at 5pm a Toorak Uniting Church."

What was the main influence behind your wedding day?

"The main inspiration for our wedding day was to prioritise enjoyment and create an unforgettable experience for our guests, adding a touch of uniqueness and luxe. While considering a marquee wedding, we aimed for something distinct and special. Upon reaching out to our friend Jason Jones, owner of Entrecote, about hosting a big wedding at his restaurant, he surprisingly agreed, exclusively for us. It turned out to be an incredible night, thanks to Jason and his team who made it truly remarkable. Delicious food, fine champagne and wine, captivating entertainment, and a stunning venue with incredible interiors."

Where did you find the bulk of your inspiration?

"The venue greatly influenced our inspiration; its distinct French theme guided our overall look and feel. We opted for a classic and chic approach, trusting our suppliers who are experts in their field. Our florist, Steven from Le Salon Aux Fleurs, is a true master of his craft. With an open brief, he beautifully incorporated the winter season, creating stunning foraged arrangements alongside classic white flowers."

How did you choose your suppliers?

Referrals and connections played a significant role. Having previously collaborated with Louisa, our wedding planner, and being familiar with Andy, we had heard exceptional feedback. True to reputation, Andy surpassed our expectations, delivering an outstanding experience."

What was the most difficult thing about planning your wedding?

"In our search for a ceremony venue, we finally settled on a Church. Matt Davis was christened and baptised at Toorak Uniting Church, and they graciously welcomed the idea of marrying us, marking the first gay marriage at the church."

Where did you spend your honeymoon?

"We went on a mini-moon to Halcyon House, Cabarita Beach and official honeymoon in January where we will go skiing in Europe."

Any advice for other couples planning their day and finding it difficult to navigate the journey?

"Hire a wedding planner and great suppliers you can trust."
